This is a small selection from three hundred photographs collected in my book 'Yatra; Journeys in India'. The photographs were taken throughout a series of ten visits to the sub-continent between 2004 and 2022. The visitor can never entirely get under the skin of a culture. The photographs in the book for the most part avoid the cliched views that star as a backdrop in typical Instagram selfies (the tourist gaze). Still, they were made by an observer, a tourist, looking from the outside in. But this notion is a double edged sword, because it makes one look at everything as though it is extraordinary and special.
